Summer vacation. 10-year-old Emma goes to visit her grandmother Dolly in the country. Old Klipperbusch has just died there and his horse Mississippi is in danger of being sent to the horse slaughterhouse, because Klipperbusch's nephew, Albert Gansmann, has nothing to do with animals. This is in stark contrast to Dolly, who, together with Emma and vet Knapps, buys the horse from Gansmann. Strangely enough, shortly afterwards Gansmann wants to buy Mississippi back for a lot of money. Emma and her friend Leo immediately realize that this is not out of love for animals and find out that Gansmann's sudden interest has something to do with Klippersbusch's will. However, no one suspects how far Gansmann will go to get Mississippi back into his possession. Emma, Leo, Dolly and the vet have their hands full trying to thwart the nasty plans.
