By Andrea Kindt, based on the novel of the same name by Christiane Tramitz.

Because she was heartbroken, the seventeen-year-old farmer's daughter Maria packed her rucksack in 1941, left her father's farm and climbed up to the mountain pasture below the Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps. From then on, she tended the cattle there as a dairymaid and never returned to the valley from her alpine pasture, not even in the harsh winters. She led a life full of both privation and variety in the midst of often inhospitable nature. Maria gives free rein to her thoughts and tells herself and the viewer in associative form what she has experienced over the years.
