In 2002, the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart was opened as Germany's first political and historical state museum. It is part of the architecturally sophisticated ensemble of museum and university buildings on Stuttgart's cultural mile, designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford. The museum presents the history and numerous facets of the country in a fascinating exhibition architecture. The Haus der Geschichte team has been successfully designing exhibitions in all parts of the southwest and initiating numerous historical projects since 1992.
THE GERMAN SOUTHWEST FROM 1790 TO THE PRESENT DAY
Regional history comes to life in elaborately staged rooms. The 1,500 original exhibits make it clear how great history had an impact on a small scale, how much political change and technical progress, war and peace, hardship and prosperity affected each individual. Why are there tiny, 200-year-old bread rolls in a display case? Why is the sight of children playing happily on a film from the Nazi era so horrifying? The permanent exhibition shows unusual, important and new things about southwest Germany.
A walk-through map shows how the contours of today's Baden-Württemberg emerged from a patchwork of 200 territories under Napoleon. It is the starting point for an impressive journey through the state's history - across the shaky ground of uncertain revolutionary times, through the German Empire, along the fates of the world wars and National Socialism to the controversial founding of the state and into the current media age.
The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm, Thursdays until 9 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Free admission for children and schoolchildren. Adults pay 5 euros (concessions 2.50 euros) for the permanent exhibition and 5 euros (concessions 2.50 euros) for the special exhibition. The combined ticket costs 8 euros (reduced 4 euros). Families receive reduced admission (half price for adults).
The museum can be visited free of charge on Thursdays from 6 pm.
