Two top ensembles - Musica Fiata and La Capella Ducale - conducted by Roland Wilson, this year's winner of the International Heinrich Schütz Festival, will present Heinrich Schütz's Christmas History in the Berlin version based on the manuscript of the Nikolaikirche, Berlin, on the first weekend of Advent in the Sophienkirche. The program will be complemented by the five-choir Magnificat as well as other works by Schütz for the Advent and Christmas season.
The so-called "Berlin version" of Schütz's Christmas History, which is regarded as the composer's last will and testament and which differs considerably from the early version printed several times in new editions, only became accessible again in 2001.
The work will be heard in this form in Berlin for the first time since the 17th century.
