HiPHOP iN TiME Kino

"HiPHOP iN TiME Kino" is a monthly film series dedicated to the history, development and depth of hip-hop culture. The focus is on selected documentaries and music films from the years 1982 to 2008, which reveal the origins and diverse forms of expression of an urban street culture.

The films shown are not classic mainstream productions, but independent films that allow us to understand hip hop as a cultural system as a whole - with its roots in DJing, breakdancing, beatboxing, graffiti and street art as well as its musical connections to jazz, funk, soul, reggae or dub. Because HH. is often only read as a surface today - ego, click figures and R A P.

Hip hop is not understood here as a genre, but as an evolved cultural form with history, political dimensions, community structures and strong forms of self-empowerment. The films provide insights into social fractures as well as creative processes and collective identity.

The series sees itself as an open space for communal viewing and discussion - more living room than cinema. The film screenings are accompanied by curated DJ sets and a brief discussion of the content.
The idea for this series stems from a personal DVD and BluRay collection that has grown over many years. At some point, it became clear that these films didn't just belong on a shelf, but in rooms where they could be watched, listened to and discussed together.
Films such as "Do The Right Thing" by Spike Lee or "The Black Power Mixtape", for example, as well as films from the New Black Cinema scene, represent precisely this depth: not nostalgia, but highly political contemporary documents that are still relevant today. Especially in Thuringia and East Germany, this form of cultural space currently has a special and important meaning again.
