Exhibition in the New City Hall of Leipzig (Lower Wandelhalle) from January 27 to March 30, 2026

The tour provides information about the more than hundred-year history of the complex at Riebeckstraße 63 in Leipzig, which is primarily characterized by exclusion, "detention" and the disciplining of social outsiders. The tour focuses on the ruptures and continuities of the building complex in relation to topics such as work, sexuality and deviance. In particular, the everyday lives of those affected are illustrated using biographical examples. Opened on 8 November 1892, the municipal workhouse was the epitome of repressive social policy, stigmatization, exclusion and forced labour for decades.

The Riebeckstraße 63 initiative is campaigning for a memorial, learning and meeting place on the site of the former municipal workhouse.

An exhibition project of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial in cooperation with the Saxon Memorials Foundation in Memory of the Victims of Political Tyranny
