HO TZU NYEN: Time & the Tiger

With HO TZU NYEN: Time & the Tiger, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is dedicating a solo exhibition toHo Tzu Nyen (*1976), one of the most innovative international artists, and showing his multifaceted work of the last two decades. The Singaporean artist creates complex video works and immersive multimedia installations rooted in Southeast Asian culture and based on historical events, documentary material, art history, music videos and mythical stories. Time & the Tiger presents five large installations: Two works created for the exhibition - the two-channel projection T for Time (2023-ongoing) and the series of 43 videos T for Time: Timepieces (2023-ongoing) - explore the concept of time in greater depth. In Hotel Aporia (2019), a polyphony of narratives contrasts with the influence of Japanese imperialism in Asia during the Second World War. One or Several Tigers (2017) examines the figure and appearance of the tiger in Southeast Asian mythologies and the role it plays in narratives about the founding of Singapore during the colonial era. Finally, CDOSEA (The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia) (2017-ongoing) consists of a variety of images, video clips and texts from the internet, which together form a kaleidoscopic portrait of Southeast Asia.
