Hoffnung und Herausforderungen im Ostkongo

In the organizer's words:

Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo remains one of the world's most complex and underreported crisis regions. Since the 1990s, ongoing violence-linked to the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide and the Congo wars-has destabilized the east. Armed groups, geopolitical tensions, and competition over valuable resources like cobalt and gold continue to fuel conflict, while much of the wealth leaves the country without benefiting local communities.

The humanitarian situation is severe: millions are internally displaced, and food insecurity is rising dramatically. At the same time, human rights violations remain widespread and often underreported.

Our panel discussion brings together perspectives from diplomacy, civil society, and research to explore current developments and key questions: What are the prospects for peace? How can regional cooperation foster stability? And what responsibilities do international actors and global supply chains hold?

Our speakers:

  • Johann Swinnen - Honorary Ambassador
  • Ciarán Wrons-Passmann - Managing Director, Ecumenical Network Central Africa
  • Kennedy Muhindo Wema - Civil society (DR Congo)
  • Rachel Kamana - Civil society (DR Congo)
  • Moderation: Julia Seibert (GIZ)
