Homage Satyajit Ray July 19 to August 31, 2024 at Kino Arsenal
The films of Bengali director, composer and author Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) are among the fixed stars of international cinema. His oeuvre spans more than 30 works in a wide variety of genres, from the neo-realist Apu trilogy and precisely observed contemporary dramas to film adaptations of historical material, chamber dramas and documentaries. Ray's work has accompanied Arsenal since the association's first events in 1963. arsenal distribution has now been able to distribute six digitally restored films by the director, including key works such as CHARULATA (The Lonely Wife, India 1964) and MAHANAGAR (The Big City, India 1963). We are taking this significant expansion of the distribution range as an opportunity to pay homage, which, in addition to the distribution DCPs, contains both contemporary and restored 35mm film prints, including the Apu trilogy, which established Ray's worldwide fame in the mid-1950s, as well as two documentary works about Ray. Akira Kurosawa once said: "Not to have seen the films of Satyajit Ray is to live in a world without sun or moon." This homage is an invitation to explore Ray's cosmos, to (re)encounter the visual and acoustic magic as well as the humanistic power of his films, which Arsenal invites you to do from July 19 to August 31.
