Muacy Trio

Tribute to Moacir Santos

Trigo Santana – bass
Mauricio Takara – drums
Eurico Ferreira Mathias – cello

The second concert in the series is dedicated to one of Brazil’s most significant—yet still relatively unknown internationally—composers, who would have turned 100 this year: Moacir Santos (1926–2006)

Santos was a composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and educator. He shaped 20th-century Brazilian music like few others, blending jazz, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, classical compositional techniques, and the music of northeastern Brazil into a sound all his own. His album “Coisas” (1965) is considered groundbreaking for Brazilian music.
After moving to the U.S. in 1967, he worked as a composer for film and television and influenced generations of Brazilian and international musicians.

The Muacy Trio pays tribute to this extraordinary musical legacy from a contemporary perspective, combining respect for the original with great freedom of improvisation.

About the Muacy Trio:
Trigo Santana is one of the most versatile bassists on Berlin’s Brazilian jazz and improvisation scene.
Mauricio Takara is one of the defining drummers of experimental Brazilian music, moving between jazz, free improvisation, rock, and electronic music, while
Eurico Ferreira Mathias enriches the trio’s sound with his expressive cello playing. These three outstanding musicians came to Berlin for their training and further education—and have stayed.

Together, the trio breathes new life into Moacir Santos’ compositions and demonstrates just how relevant and inspiring his musical legacy remains to this day.
