I feel your silence. Musik zwischen Klang, Affekt und Erzählung [Konzert / Artist Talk]

In the organizer's words:

Hans Thomalla 's music has changed over the last decade: His early pieces such as Momentsmusicaux (2004) or Fremd (2011) are characterized by a material-oriented exploration of sound, in which elements of music as language already appear, but almost always only as quotations from music history. In the works of the last ten years, especially in the operas Dark Spring (2020) and Dark Fall (2024), on the other hand, a development towards music that sees itself as a medium of expression and explores patterns of tonality in a new way becomes clear. The focus is on the attempt to articulate the affects of the present in music - individual "affects" such as irritation or forlornness or collective feelings such as stagnation or self-alienation.

In conversation with Camilla Bork, Professor of Musicology at the Free University of Berlin and an expert on music theater, the composer will talk about this development and the tension between sound, affect and narration in his music. Violinist Salvatore Di Lorenzowill playThomalla's Air (2018) for solo violin, which marks a transitional moment between these divergent compositional tendencies. The melody of the piece is defined by the direct reference to the musical language of the opera Dark Spring (2020). In terms of sound, however, the music repeatedly moves into the border regions of the instrument, with a tendency to disappear into soft noise or silence.
