When the atomic bomb drops day turns into night people become ghosts. ~ Sakamoto Hatsumi, elementary school student ("The Atomic Bomb" from Under the Atomic Cloud, September 1952)
ARTISTS AGAINST THE BOMB is an exhibition of posters calling for global nuclear disarmament. The works are poignant, provocative and inspiring, challenging viewers to reflect on the role of nuclear weapons in our world and to take action for a more peaceful future.
The exhibition includes different visual languages that reflect the multifaceted nature of the threat posed by nuclear weapons. Each poster has been designed by different artists and the collection includes both historical and newly commissioned works. These works document the cultural history of the global disarmament movement and show the diversity of artistic expression that artists have used to emphasize the need to ban nuclear weapons.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the German section of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017, ICAN Germany is bringing selected works to Berlin and inviting visitors to engage with artistic perspectives on the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons.
Whether through the production or use of nuclear weapons, the lived reality of those affected shows how nuclear weapons and the nuclear chain embody injustice and exploitation in their essence. We do not stop at mourning. Instead, we are fundamentally questioning their legitimacy.
Above all, we are using our anniversary to do what we do best: Mobilize. The exhibition serves as a place of learning and gathering, of exchange and encounter.
