Gustave Courbet’s radical visual language, his sociopolitical aspirations, and his influence on modern art have lost none of their impact to this day. He rejected the idealized aesthetics of Classicism and Romanticism and instead made the lives of ordinary people and reality the subject of his paintings. With his uncompromising stance and innovative painting technique, Courbet is regarded as a pioneer of modernism—a figure who straddled the boundaries between art, society, and politics.
The major retrospective *I, Gustave Courbet: Painter and Rebel* is dedicated to one of the most influential artists of the 19th century, an artistic innovator with a dazzling personality—driven by a quest for independence. His political commitment is reflected in his art, particularly in his engagement with the historical events and upheavals in France, which led him to flee Paris in 1873 as a political refugee and seek asylum in Switzerland.
The extensive exhibition in Essen features 85 paintings, including major works such as *Le Fou de peur* (1844), *L’Après-dînée à Ornans* ( 1849), *Jo, la belle Irlandaise* (1866), *L’Origine du Monde* ( 1866), and *L’Homme à la pipe* (1849). Spanning approximately 900 square meters, the exhibition brings together works on loan from international museums such as the Musée d’Orsay (Paris), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Nasjonalmuseet (Oslo), the Nationalmuseum (Stockholm), the Alte Nationalgalerie (Berlin), and the Musée Fabre (Montpellier), as well as from numerous private collections.
Organized into nine chapters, the exhibition traces Courbet’s life and work, linking key biographical milestones with the central themes of his artistic output—from self-portraits, landscapes, and social realism to nudes, photography, politics, and exile.
“I, Gustave Courbet: Painter and Rebel” was organized in cooperation with the Leopold Museum, Vienna.
