Il Hebreo Mantovano – Porträtkonzert Salomone Rossi
In the organizer's words:
A Jewish Composer at the Court of Mantua
Concert with Profeti della Quinta (Basel) and Collegium Musicum ’23
As a violinist and court composer for the Gonzaga family in Mantua, Salomone Rossi blended Italian madrigals, innovative instrumental music, and Hebrew liturgy into a unique musical language. For the program “Il Hebreo Mantovano,” the Leipzig ensemble Collegium Musicum ’23, together with the Basel vocal ensemble Profeti della Quinta, explores the extraordinary life and work of this Jewish-Italian composer, who was born around 1570 and died in 1630.
The program features Italian madrigals, instrumental works, and Hebrew liturgical chants. This creates a fascinating dialogue between Jewish and Christian musical cultures in early 17th-century Italy.
