In the eye of the storm - The Falke sisters, Doris Boeckmann and Ora Doelk

The performative exhibition In the Eye of the Storm at PARABEL - Center for Art in Hamburg is dedicated to the dancers Gertrud and Ursula Falke, the costume designer Doris Boeckmann and the dancer and choreographer Ora Doelk.

Before, during and after the upheavals of the First World War, the Falke sisters, as early representatives of artistic dance in Hamburg, shaped a new form of expression that later became known as expressive dance.

The exhibition takes a closer look at this artistic environment using historical photographs, newspaper reports, drawings and costume designs by Doris Boeckmann. Films, dance and performative works take up motifs and movement approaches and continue them from today's perspective. The exhibition is complemented by works by students from the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE, Altona).

An accompanying program of performances, lectures, film screenings and discussions will delve deeper into the question of art and dance in a time of social upheaval.

The exhibition is based on current research findings and the latest discoveries from estates and highlights a chapter of Hamburg's cultural history that has received little attention to date.
