Can you still trust your eyes? In the age of AI and deepfakes, this question is more relevant than ever. But manipulated images aren’t a recent phenomenon: ever since the invention of photography, images have been retouched, colorized, embellished, and staged.
The exhibition “Seriously?! Photographs. Retouching. Deepfakes.” shows how people were already altering images over 100 years ago—long before Photoshop, filters, or artificial intelligence existed. On display are historical photographs and postcards from Stuttgart, Tübingen, and other cities that were transformed into perfect images through meticulous handwork: more colorful, more beautiful, and sometimes quite misleading.
But it’s not just about looking: At interactive stations, you can try your hand at image manipulation—analog on film or with AI. And if you’re up for it, you can even turn yourself into a deepfake.
The exhibition “Seriously?! Photographs. Retouching. Deepfakes.” calls for a critical eye. Because many images are simply too good to be true.
