Independent Space Index 2026

The Independent Space Index Festival is an annual festival in Vienna that celebrates and highlights the city's independent art scene. It is organized by the network of Viennese project spaces - the Independent Space Index - and brings together more than 50 independent art spaces, so-called off-spaces, over the course of a weekend, which simultaneously open their doors to the public.

The festival offers a diverse program with around 50 to over 70 events, including exhibition openings, film screenings, workshops, performances and talks - spread across the entire city. It is aimed at anyone who wants to experience the Viennese art scene in an intimate and direct way away from the large, established institutions, as visitors have the opportunity to meet artists in person and get to know experimental initiatives that are often difficult to access.

The festival also sees itself as a networking and solidarity project: it strengthens cohesion between independent cultural initiatives and makes their contribution to contemporary art production visible. Each edition of the festival is a kind of snapshot of Vienna's diverse and vibrant independent art scene.
