InSpirit: Dora Osterloh, Ensemble O

Ensemble O is an experimental vocal ensemble from Berlin.

Dora Osterloh's compositions play with four female voices as a complete instrument, letting them speak and shout, decide and experiment. There is room for improvisation. Texts sometimes have meaning in terms of content, sometimes in terms of sound. The individual chases the collective and is captured by it.

The members of the ensemble are all singers from the young Berlin jazz scene.

Their artistic personalities and soloistic qualities come together in the ensemble to form a unique body of sound.

Berlin-based singer and composer Dora Osterloh combines in her musical expression the lightness of improvisation with harmonic and melodic depth, as well as abstract, emotional lyrics and rhythmic complexity. As an integral part of the Berlin jazz and improvisation scene, she can be heard in a wide variety of constellations and bands. In recent years, she has worked as a composer for her vocal ensemble ENSEMBLE O and developed various solo concepts, most recently the singer-songwriter project SONGS, as well as her new band project PHOENIX LOVE.

InSpirit - Jazz as a spiritual musical experience in the Gedächtniskirche

The InSpirit series has characterized the summer in the Gedächtniskirche for many years: the combination of contemporary jazz music and spiritual content in a church space is unique in this form in Berlin.

The famous blue light of the stained glass windows creates an incomparable atmosphere in which to enjoy jazz as a spiritual musical experience. Renowned jazz musicians from Germany and abroad perform the evenings of the series together with theologians.

The artistic director of InSpirit is the organist of the Gedächtniskirche, Sebastian Heindl. He not only brings his personal enthusiasm for contemporary jazz to the selection of the invited musicians, but also takes part in some evenings on the large organ or Hammond organ himself.
