Translated from the Ukrainian by Juri Durkot and Sabine Stöhr.
Version for Theater Münster by Remsi Al Khalisi and Moritz Sostmann based on the novel of the same name by Serhij Zhadan
.
Somewhere in eastern Ukraine, the teacher Pasha is sent to fetch his 13-year-old nephew home from boarding school on the other side of town, because the area has unwittingly been caught up in the middle of the war.
It takes a whole day to get through the town where civilian life has collapsed. But the journey home in particular is a real test. Uncle and nephew find themselves in the immediate vicinity of the fighting: Machine guns rattle, mines explode. Paramilitary troops and stray dogs appear in the rubble, apathetic people stumble disoriented through an apocalyptic urban landscape.
In images of enormous urgency, Serhij Zhadan depicts how the familiar surroundings are transformed into an eerie territory. He was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in June 2022. Director Moritz Sostmann will bring this story to the stage with actors and puppets.
Internat is dedicated to war as a complex of themes, specifically the war of aggression against Ukraine. The psychological and physical consequences for the (civilian) population will be addressed and staged, including through the use of humanoid puppets.
