In the organizer's words:

As part of World Dance Day, the Italian Cultural Institute Cologne is presenting the Italia Danza project. The performances will take place on April 29 from 6.30 p.m. on the premises of the institute.

On this occasion, the dancers of the Centro Coreografico Nazionale/Aterballetto will perform so-called Microdanze, i.e. performances lasting only a few minutes, which have been specially conceived for the various rooms of the institute. In this way, the audience is offered an up-close experience that generates unique emotions through aestheticizing images and direct contact with the artists.

The performance consists of four Microdanze, short contemporary dance creations by Italian and international choreographers, which have already been shown in such impressive venues as the Acropolis Museum in Athens, the National Museum Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome and the Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels. With the idea that our Institute will be transformed into an unexpectedly altered space of dance, the performances point to a fundamental aspect of contemporary Italian creativity: that of presenting new forms of expression to new audiences.

The 4 performances will be staged twice:

First performance: 18.30

Second performance: 19.30

Free admission. Due to limited capacity, registration is required at: iiccolonia@esteri.it stating your first and last name and the desired time.

Aterballetto, the largest dance company in Italy (apart from the Symphonic Theatres), has been active for almost four decades and is based in Reggio Emilia. It was named Centro Coreografico Nazionale (CNN) in 2022, the most important center for dance in Italy. The most important tasks of the center are the creation of choreographies and the dissemination of contemporary Italian dance abroad.

Below you will find some information about the four performances that will be shown at the institute.

EPPUR SI MUOVE / AND YET SHE MOVES

Choreography: Francesca Lattuada
Dancer: Arianna Ganassi

Wrapped in Bruno Fatalot's sophisticated, incredible costume and carried away by the melancholy and mysterious sounds of the Allegretto from Beethoven's 7th Symphony, we follow the solemn movements of the performer on a barrel platform. Her captivating dance is more seductive than a prayer song.

Duration: 5 minutes.

NEAR LIFE EXPERIENCE

Choreography: Angelin Preljocaj
Dancers: Arianna Kob and Matteo Fiorani

Near lifeexperience is an exploration of forms of body expression that refer to intermediate sensations. The attempt to withdraw from space and time. A kind of eclipse of the self, a striving through this imaginary amnion - a new description of a space abandoned by the body.

Duration: 9 minutes.

AN ECHO, A WAVE

Choreography: Philippe Kratz
Dancers: Federica Lamonaca e Giovanni Leone

No other panorama comes closer to the difficult concept of eternity than that of the endless sea. When we look at its seemingly endless blue surface, we understand how transient, how small and limited we are: A proverbial drop in the ocean. The sea is a wonderful place, a place of dreams and promise that triggers an intoxicating fascination and great serenity. It hypnotizes us, absorbs us and amazes our minds. When we follow the movements of a dancer, we sometimes find this natural, uninterrupted movement of the surface of the sea. And when we watch two people dancing, we always experience different states of mind, contradictory feelings, closeness and distance.

Duration: 15 minutes.

A GIG

Choreography and costumes: Diego Tortelli
Dancers: Ana Patricia Alves Tavares and Nolan Millioud

A "gig" is an opening or closing number. Something short that serves to warm up the audience or say goodnight. With this last micro-dance, the two dancers want to touch the audience's eyes, like a surprise in a setting where this little "gig" is not expected (Diego Tortelli).

Duration: 6 minutes.

Italia Danza is a project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the CCN/Aterballetto. It is organized by the Direzione Generale per la Diplomazia Pubblica e Culturale of the MAECI in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institutes and with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia.
