The jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery completely redefined the role of the guitar in jazz in just a few years from the end of the 1950s to the end of the 1960s. Inspired by the playing style of saxophonists and pianists, he developed a melodious solo concept that still defines the style today. The Bremerhaven jazz guitarist Jörg Seidel, who is one of the busiest representatives of swinging jazz in the German-speaking world, is also repeatedly inspired by Montgomery's playing and has put together a top-class trio for a short tour to commemorate the outstanding jazz guitarist of the 1960s.
In a classic organ trio line-up, Seidel plays Montgomery's compositions as well as standards that were part of his repertoire. Bremen musician Oliver Poppe, one of Germany's leading jazz pianists, will be coming to Bremerhaven. On this evening, he will play his organ in the style of Melvin Rhyne, who played with Montgomery for many years. Drummer Manuel Weyand will be traveling from Seoul in South Korea. He is one of the most important musicians on the Korean mainstream jazz scene. With great stylistic confidence, he is musically adept and a virtuoso in bebop. Jörg Seidel, who counts Tal Farlow and Django Reinhardt among his important role models alongside Montgomery, has developed his very own melodic style. Singable lines and harmonies reminiscent of Montgomery characterize his playing, which has been accompanied by Greetje Kauffeld, Bill Ramsey and Harry Allen, among others. All three will ensure that the evening is a particularly swinging tribute to Wes Montgomery.
