Not Bad is a quartet of free improvised instrumental music composed of musicians from Portugal and Germany. This November, however, the formation performs as a trio at Import Export. The group consists of Guilherme Rodrigues (cello), Günter Baby Sommer (drums/percussions) and Gonçalo Mortágua (saxophone/flute). The quartet also represents two generations of contemporary improvised music in Europe through the age of the musicians (between 35 and 80). After several joint rehearsals, the quartet recorded its first live album in Berlin in June 2022. The combination of jazz drummer legend Baby Sommer with the other members proved to be particularly interesting from an artistic point of view. The album was released in January 2023 via Creative Sources Recordings. The pieces fall into the realm of free improvised music, born from the confluence of American free jazz and contemporary classical music. The main influences are Derek Bailey, Evan Parker and Albert Ayler. The immediate compositions also draw on the diverse musical backgrounds, individual styles and techniques of the band members, taking listeners on a challenging as well as eventful journey into instrumental sound worlds. This creates an aesthetic that thrives on the collaboration between different musical personalities, age groups and countries.
