With the naked eye you can see a few thousand stars, the shining band of the Milky Way and a few small nebulae in the sky. It was only with telescopes that it became possible to reveal the nature of the Milky Way as a huge cloud of stars. A dispute arose over some of the nebulae: do they simply represent gas clouds or are they star clouds far outside the Milky Way?
