JGS JazzClubNight

In the organizer's words:

Various ensembles at the Jacob Grimm School have been jazzin', soulin' and funkin' for 30 years now. In the field of popular music, there is now a wide range of different formats and styles in which pupils can let off steam musically. In addition to the jazz combo and the big band, the young people make music at the "talent factory"
(Hessenschau, 18.08.2018), the young people at the "talent factory" have also recently started playing in the "mixed band" and have been rehearsing in self-organized ensembles such as the Grimm Tentet or currently in the band "Indigo". JGS students are constantly producing their own bands and line-ups, the most prominent of which are Milky Chance and the singer LEA.
The Heinrich Schütz School big band rehearses in close cooperation with JGS and performs at the beginning of the concert evening. The pupils from grades 6-10 will play pop, jazz and rock arrangements under the direction of Christian Hanf and Bernd Trusheim. The newly formed "Mixed Band" under the direction of Thomas Hofmann will also be taking part. The line-up is open to all genres and instruments plus vocals and therefore offers scope for a variety of musical surprises.
Afterwards, the JGS big band will be playing bigger instruments. This year the band will be playing soul, funk and fusion classics as well as more contemporary music from the JazzRausch big band and Snarky Puppy, among others. There is room for more complex instrumental arrangements with longer solo passages as well as a party atmosphere with the talented female vocal soloists. The big band originated as a project and has developed into a full-score line-up since 1993, including vocals from the very beginning. For many years, the band was led by its founder Rainer Tigges; in 2013, Lisa Sommerfeld, Bernd Trusheim and Florian Brauer took over the leadership of the formation. Over the years, the big band has taken part in numerous competitions and projects (including "Battle of the Bands", CD production "And so it goes", Comenius projects), and concert tours have taken the ensemble to other European countries. In particular, the band has maintained its friendship with the big band of Vaskivouri Lukio in Vantaa (Finland) almost from the beginning, and for some years now there has also been intensive contact with the big band of the Katedralskole in Aarhus (Denmark). The three big bands regularly celebrate making music together at big band festivals, most recently in Vantaa/Helsiniki in 2025.
