Jim Avignon is one of the best-known and at the same time most unusual German Pop Art artists. Under the title Jim Avignon: Pop Parade, the artist is showing a selection of works from the last 30 years of his creative career in the 700 square meter Kunsthalle Pfaffenhofen - pop, political and always in tune with the times.
Jim Avignon moves between pop culture, social criticism and artistic subversion. His works are characterized by a colourful and comic-like painting style. Avignon's pictorial worlds are populated by exaggerated human figures, anthropomorphized animals and living things. In his paintings, he repeatedly explores themes such as consumer society, digitalization and the challenges of the modern world. He quotes great works of art history and catapults them into the present with a wink. With his unmistakable style, which is characterized by bright colors, reduced forms and clear outlines, he is able to give serious themes a humorous, sometimes whimsical touch. Avignon's simultaneously ironic and affectionate view of the world is reflected in all his works.
A central aspect of Jim Avignon's work is its very rapid execution: his many works, produced at high speed, allow him to sell them at sometimes very low prices. At the beginning of his artistic career, he attracted attention with spectacular actions, for example during "documenta IX" in 1992: under the motto "destroy art galleries", he painted a large-format picture every day for three weeks, only to destroy it again in the evening as part of a public spectacle. His 24-hour painting campaign at the Schacher Gallery in Stuttgart in 2017 is also well known. The walls he painted were whitewashed again immediately afterwards. Jim Avignon remains deliberately elusive for the traditional art world.
Jim Avignon is also an extraordinary musician. When he arrived in Berlin at the end of the 1980s, his work was initially inextricably linked to the sound of the city growing together - techno music. This earned him the title "Titian of techno". On June 28, for the Long Night of Art and Music, he will be giving a concert under his pseudonym "Neoangin" from 10 p.m., before which you can meet him at the live painting session from 5 to 7 p.m.
