To mark the publication of the English translation of the third volume of Aesthetics of Resistance by Peter Weiss, guests from academia, activism and literature will talk about their personal relationship to the work.
The Aesthetics of Resistance is one of the key works of German post-war literature. Peter Weiss' magnum opus, published between 1975 and 1981, is an extraordinary historical novel that traces the history of the anti-fascist resistance movements in Europe in the run-up to and during the Second World War. At the same time, the book explores the relationship between the practice of resistance and aesthetic forms. In times when fascist tendencies are once again gaining strength, the book offers valuable advice on how we can organize ourselves politically and be active in such an environment.
A good 20 years after the publication of the first volume in English, we talk to people involved in the project, as well as activists and experts with a personal connection to the work.
Lectures and readings by: Scholars Jenny Willner and Alexander Lin, activist Simin Jawabreh and translators Charlotte Thießen and Joel Scott.
The books will be available on site.
The event will be held mainly in English.
With the support of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office as part of "Kultur am 1. Mai!"
An event to celebrate the release of the English translation of the third volume of Peter Weiss's Aesthetics of Resistance, with readings and discussions.
The Aesthetics of Resistance is one of the major works of postwar German literature. Originally published between 1975 and 1981, Peter Weiss's magnum opus is a remarkable historical novel about antifascist resistance movements in the lead up, and during the Second World War. At the same time, the book interrogates the relationship between the praxis of resistance and aesthetic forms. Against the backdrop of a renewed rise of global fascisms, the book offers valuable hints as to how to organize and work politically today. To celebrate the release of volume 3 in English some 20 years after the first volume appeared, Vierte Welt will host a launch featuring talks and readings with people involved in the project and scholars and activists. Readings and talks by: academics Jenny Willner and Alexander Lin, activist and organizer Simin Jawabreh, and translators Charlotte Thießen and Joel Scott.
Copies of all three volumes will be available for sale on the night.
The event will be (mostly) in English
Supported by the Bezirksamt Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
