The St. Matthew Passion, Bach's masterpiece of musical representation of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of St. Matthew, is one of the highlights of Protestant church music. First performed in Leipzig's St. Thomas Church on Good Friday 1727, the St. Matthew Passion is one of Bach's authentic Passion works to have survived in its entirety. With a performance time of over 180 minutes and the participation of the Dresden Kreuzchor, several soloists and a large orchestra, it is his most extensive and most heavily scored work, which is traditionally performed every year on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in the Kreuzkirche Dresden.
