JOKESI Club :: Lesung mit Tayo Awosusi-Onutor

On Sunday afternoon, Tayo Awosusi-Onutor will read from JOKESI CLUB, the first German-language children's book with Romani and Sinti characters as the heroines of the story!

In volume 1 Jekh, Dui, Drin - 3 girlfriends in Berlin, we get to know Jovanka, Kemi and Sina. They are best friends and also happen to be the founders of the JOKESI Club. The club has already solved some tricky puzzles and cases. Apart from their friendship, the three friends have something else in common. Jovanka and Kemi's family are Roma. Sina's family are Sinti. They are in the 4th grade at an elementary school in Berlin. Everything is actually quite normal, as usual. Until Lukas joins their class after the fall break. Lukas seems quite nice and a bit shy. He always wears a green cap. The cap is probably his lucky charm. One day, the three friends see Lukas sitting on the floor behind the gym, crying. What on earth has happened? Why is Lukas crying? And where is his green cap? Jovanka, Kemi and Sina know immediately: this is a case for the JOKESI Club.

In volume 2 Jekh, Dui, Drin - Star, Bansh, Shop - The Secret of the Kaleidoscope, Jovanka is given a kaleidoscope. Everyone loves it. The 3 friends meet Yemisi and Toyin and become friends. Toyin has a secret that she doesn't want anyone to know. But when this happens, everything comes to an unexpected end. What secret is Toyin hiding? And what does it have to do with the kaleidoscope? Jovanka, Kemi and Sina know immediately: this is a case for the JOKESI Club.

Tayo Awosusi-Onutor is a singer, author, publisher, political activist and lives in Berlin. She describes herself as Afro-Sintezza. She interprets her music in English, German and Romani. Tayo studied German and multimedia in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe. She is a board member and co-founder of RomaniPhen e.V., the feminist Romnja* archive, and a member of IniRromnja.

She is interested in education, history and the civil rights movement. In 2017, she published the film documentary Phral mende - Wir über uns. Perspectives of Sinti* and Roma* in Germany. Awosusi-Onutor's first children's book Jokesi Club was published in 2021. Jekh, Dui, Drin - 3 friends in Berlin. Volume 2 JOKESI Club. Star, Bansh, Shop - The Secret of the Kaleidoscope followed in 2024. The book series will be published by omobooks Verlag from 2023, which aims to offer all (young) people books that make different realities of life visible. Especially those that are often invisible. Instead of writing about situations or people, the focus here is on their own voices.
