In cooperation with PACT, the annual Literaturdistrikt Festival in Essen is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an anniversary evening, which also marks the end of the transdisciplinary symposium IMPACT24. Literaturdistrikt celebrates the diversity of human expression and promotes creative collaborations and exchange in a plural and diverse society.
On this evening, PACT will screen the 2024 remastered documentary 'Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul' by Fatih Akin. This will be followed by a concert with the band Ayyuka.
Award-winning director Fatih Ak in takes us on an enchanting musical journey through Istanbul in his groundbreaking, newly restored documentary. With his mobile recording studio, German musician Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) sets out to capture the musical diversity of the vibrant metropolis on the Bosporus and paint a captivating portrait of Turkish music. In the process, he discovers a wide range - from electronic music to rock and hip-hop to classical arabesque. From intimate interviews, lively street performances and personal encounters, the film weaves a story that celebrates the fusion of different musical traditions. The film is an invitation to experience the transcendent beauty of music and its universal, unifying power.
Founded in 2001, Ayyuka is one of the first bands to look back to the Turkish music of the 70s in order to find a new voice. Without a trace of "retromania", but as a reincarnation of Turkish psychedelic, the band has succeeded in developing an unmistakable, unique sound. Immediately after their debut in 2007, Ayyuka shared the stage with Sonic Youth and Jonathan Richmond. Their third studio album 'Sömestr', which is completely instrumental, is a cult album for record collectors. The band is currently experimenting with alternative music writing techniques and touches on genres such as afro-beat, funk, bossanova and arabesque on their new EP.
