A deer on the side of the highway. The contrails of airplanes landing in Tegel just before the sun sets behind the old bungalow at the end of the street. The whisper of the wind in the reeds and the croaking frogs in between. The moments beside the scenes, beside the main plot, away from the big waves. Juli Gilde's music could be described in one way or another. There are huge echo chambers on the guitars, dust-dry piano tracks from the living room of her parents' house, cassette-like tape effects, lyrics that make you pause and condemn you to listen. If they weren't in German, you might think the songs were American, far from the mainstream, where Phoebe Bridgers and David Bowie meet Sufjan Stevens and Lana del Rey for a coffee. A friend once said to Juli: "Your music is exactly what I love in the English scene, but doesn't exist in German." But it does exist. You can hear it on Juli's recently released album "it's hard to be a blizzard", for example, or her EPs "euphorie und panik!" and "french bookwood". Suburban stories, half coming-of-age novels, "call me by your name" romance and the fear of what is yet to come. Or what will not come. Bright, sometimes radiant songs, in summer forest green, straw blonde, cornflower blue and mauve.
