For her concert with the Karajan Academy, our Artist in Residence Janine Jansen has selected three works that combine lightness with depth: Beethoven's Septet captivates with its serenade-like character and the sophisticated interplay between winds and strings. In his Two Pieces for String Octet, Shostakovich first celebrates Bach's baroque tonal language before surprising us with wit and irony. Finally, Bartók's Divertimento, composed in 1939, takes up the tradition of Viennese classical music and mixes it with the rhythms and melodies of Hungarian folk dances. But threatening harmonies are also heard, heralding the approaching world war.
