Do you feel like getting out and about, but a typical stroll through the city just doesn’t cut it? Then here’s a tip for Kiel: a self-guided treasure hunt on your smartphone—using a map and compass to make your way across the city, from the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament to the Warleberger Hof.
You’ll dive into a story: A sealed box is discovered in the attic of an old townhouse—inside, a weathered letter, a rough map, and a riddle-like promise: “Whoever recognizes the signs will find what was once hidden in the storm.” After all, Kiel was once a port, a Hanseatic city, and a notorious hideout for pirates. Together with your friends, you’ll pick up the trail. The clues will lead you through the city: from the former naval base to secret vantage points and encrypted numbers, all the way to symbols on old buildings. Your mission: Solve logic puzzles, decode nautical clues, follow waypoints through the palace gardens, and even decipher musical messages at the opera house. In the end, your intuition will be the deciding factor—because only one number leads to the hidden spot in the fjord.
Highlights of your mission include a telescope puzzle with a view of the fjord from the Botanical Garden, a secret code on the steps of the closed art museum, and a showdown at the “Kleiner Kiel,” where all clues ultimately point to a single number. At each stop, you’ll find fascinating information—just like on a city tour—along with puzzles and challenges.
The concept is simple: You book, are ready to go immediately, and start whenever you want—the rally can be played around the clock (best during daylight hours) and is valid for three years. Everything runs via a web app directly in your browser; no download is necessary, and no guide is required. All you need to bring are charged smartphones with internet access (only a few MB) and, ideally, a power bank. According to feedback from other players, the difficulty level is moderate, and if something comes up: You can cancel your booking for free up until the start. If you’d like, you can split into teams and compete against each other with statistics, rankings, and high scores.
