In the organizer's words:
Kirill Petrenko dedicates himself to two key works of the 20th century: With the Chamber Symphony No. 1, Arnold Schoenberg initiated a turning point in his creative work, away from the full sound of late Romanticism and towards a modern, sinewy musical language. The expressive power that this can develop is also shown by his unfinished oratorio Die Jakobsleiter (Jacob's Ladder), for which Schönberg was inspired by an Old Testament story: The composer takes Jacob's dream of the ladder to heaven that leads to God as a parable for man's search for spirituality.
