WOMEN IN JAZZ - KIRKE KARJA TRIO (DE/DK, CAN) ESTONIA JAZZ

In 2020, pianist and composer Kirke Karja, born in Estonia in 1989, founded a pan-European trio. She is joined by German drummer Ludwig Wandinger and French bassist Etienne Renard. What is fascinating about this formation is that the three musicians, who are almost the same age, work with unusual forms of improvisation.

The trio's music is characterized by a special harmony and is created through free interplay. Together they explore a variety of dynamic nuances and use the entire spectrum of acoustic expression. Rhythmically, they move effortlessly from clear beats to floating, pulsating structures. The trio's sound language has a universal appeal: on the one hand, it makes the connection to the Afro-American jazz tradition clear, but on the other, it also allows European cultural influences to emerge clearly.
