Beguiling classical mugham singing

The ensemble around the up-and-coming female voice Nisbet Sədrayeva is dedicated to classical Azerbaijani mugham.
The mugham style reflects different eras in the history of the Caucasus country on the Black Sea and its contacts with Persians, Armenians, Georgians and other Turkic peoples. Stylistic similarities with the Iraqi maqam, the Persian radif and the Turkish makams can be recognized. Mugham belongs to the modal styles: a mode is a tone scale that has a certain emotional tone due to its specific micro-intervals. The aim of a mugham musician is to develop this mode as imaginatively and virtuosically as possible, in a constant and incessant flow. The singer is accompanied by musicians who play traditional instruments such as the long-necked lute Tar, the four-stringed spiked fiddle Kamancha, the frame drum Daf or the cylindrical drum Nagara. Mugham cannot be notated in a fixed form, but the respective versions are handed down by masters who train their students in the art of interpretation and improvisation. And although mugham today is a classical academic art, it draws on popular melodies from bards, folk music dance rhythms and special playing techniques, making mugham one of the most popular forms of music in the country today.
Originally, mugham was mainly played on secular occasions such as weddings and at salons by music lovers in private settings, as well as being cultivated as a spiritual form by Sufi orders.
The classical mugams are divided into three groups: instrumental mugams, vocal-instrumental mugams and rhythmic mugams.
In 2008, UNESCO inscribed the Azerbaijani mugam on the International Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and in 2012 the artisanal instrument making and performance practice of the long-necked lute Tar.
