What's classy if you're rich, what's trashy if you're poor? - When are a pair of untied shoes and holes in your pants a fad, a trend and a cultural upgrade, when are they a symbol of poverty? Or when is living precariously more of a performative attitude than a material reality that has established itself in the art and culture industry?

Although there has been more and more transparency in recent years - albeit not enough - about money, power structures and working conditions, inequalities based on social background seem to be moving slowly and tenaciously to the surface, let alone softening. The term "classism" marks different forms of exclusion and discrimination in relation to class origin or affiliation. Class shapes not only financial opportunities, but also language, appearance, a habitus and belonging. It determines which spaces people can enter and how they feel at home there. Those who know the cultural codes, usually because they have already been socialized there, move through art and cultural institutions as a matter of course. Those who don't know them are often left out. And it is precisely these mechanisms of exclusion and devaluation that need to be unraveled and thus made vulnerable.

Klassenreise - Aktionen zu sozialer Herkunft attempts to fan out the field of structural, classist inequalities with the help of various activist, academic and artistic event formats. The program will take place over four weeks from mid-April to mid-May at various cultural venues in Hamburg and will frame, among other things, Labour Day on 1 May and Aktion Mensch's Protest Day for Inclusion. From exhibitions, performances, a film program, workshops and lectures, there will be participative and informative moments of exchange and togetherness. In an attempt to embark on a journey along invisible borders, material conditions and on the trail of different artistic and political strategies.
