Igor Levit is an extraordinary personality, both as a globally acclaimed pianist and as a political activist. For the New York Times, he combines "exquisite technical accomplishment, extraordinary sophistication of tone and bold programmatic penetration", in short, he is one of the "most important artists of his generation". Away from the stage, however, it is also his duty as a musician to express himself in a socially critical manner on topics such as anti-Semitism and exclusion. At his first piano recital at the Musikfest, however, he will first and foremost let the music speak - and how! With the chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor BWV 903, he will be performing one of Bach's most important individual instrumental works. Johannes Brahms appreciated it as a young virtuoso, as did Franz Liszt. While Brahms creates works of great complexity and beauty from the smallest musical unit with his 6 Piano Pieces op. 118, Liszt's arrangement of Beethoven's Seventh for solo piano gives the impression of hearing an entire orchestra - all the more so with a pianist like Igor Levit with his multi-colored and multi-faceted sound!
