Eri Mantani, winner of the Liszt Piano Competition and artistic director of the Piano Festival, presents a program in which piano works by Franz Liszt take center stage and resonate with each other across eras.
The first part is Liszt'spiano piece Polish Melodies from the suite Harvest in Woronińce, which was composed at the Ukrainian country estate of Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and is based on the melody of Chopin'ssong Mädchen's Wish. This is followed by the lyrical six Consolations, Am Wallenstadter See from the Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage), through to the colorful sounds of the impressionistic Die Wasserspiele der Villa d'Este, which later had a lasting influence on Ravel and Debussy - a panorama of Liszt's poetic sound world, which finally unfolds into brilliant virtuosity in the Grand Paganini Etude No. 6.
In the second part, we hear J.S. Bach'smasterful contrapuntal art in Liszt's arrangement of the Prelude and Fugue in A minor for organ, and with Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 ("Symphony of Fate"), Liszt then allows us to experience the power and drama of the orchestra through a single instrument in a spectacular way.
