A crisis always results in a few winners and a lot of losers. The Pinnebergs are certainly among the latter, and yet they always find salvation in themselves, in their love for each other and for their Murkel. In a politically heated atmosphere in which National Socialism is spreading and in a system that sells everything and everyone and turns them into a profitable mass, only mutual solidarity can protect them from isolation and social decline.
Johannes Pinneberg and Emma Mörschel love each other - at first sight, unconditionally and to the very edge of their existence. She calls him "boy", he calls her "little lamb". She comes from a working-class family in provincial northern Germany, where he is a simple employee. When Lämmchen unexpectedly becomes pregnant, they get married. His salary is just enough to support their future family life, but it is enough - at least until Pinneberg loses his job in the small town because of an intrigue involving his boss's daughter. The only way out seems to be to go to the big city - to Berlin - where his mother Mia lives and her shady partner Jachmann is able to get him a job in the men's clothing department of the Mandel department store. But life doesn't get any easier here either: it is extremely difficult for the couple to find their own affordable apartment, Mandel is introducing increasingly rigid sales quotas and support is scarce - whether from friends or the state. The global economic crisis does the rest, and shortly after the birth of little Murkel, Pinneberg is laid off again and loses his footing. Only Lämmchen is able to keep the young family afloat, even when they end up in a bower just outside Berlin.
