Kochbuchpremiere mit Sissi Chen: Eating in Taiwan

In the organizer's words:

Sissi Chen’s new cookbook,*Eating in Taiwan*, is finally here! Join us as she takes us on a culinary journey to this island nation in East Asia. She’ll not only introduce us to this exciting and diverse cuisine through audio-visual content, but also give us a little taste of what’s to come!

Sissi Chen traveled through Taiwan for several months, sampling countless dishes. A hot oyster soup she slurped by the roadside in 40 °C heat marked her introduction to the lively world of street food. Taiwan offers a vast array of street food. The first breakfast spots open even before sunrise, serving fried dough sticks and crispy sesame flatbreads. Lunch might consist of a bowl of luroufan (braised pork), and when the sun goes down, entire stretches of street transform into night markets. There you’ll find steaming pots of soup, as well as fried chicken, papaya milk, and much more. The culinary diversity is immense.

Taiwanese cuisine is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, multicultural, and influenced by many countries. Japanese-inspired mochi and bento boxes are just as much a part of it as specialties from the indigenous peoples or Dan Dan Ramen, a Taiwanese version of Sichuan’s Dan Dan noodles. Sissi introduces us to Taiwan’s culinary landscape, shows us which ingredients to use for what, and brings traditional flavors to our plates in a modernized form. Incredibly good. Incredibly delicious.

There will be an opportunity to purchase the book that evening. Have it signed by the author herself!

Sissi Chen hostsculinary events, works as a freelance writer for ZEITmagazin, and shares her recipes with great success on her Instagram channel @eatinginberlin. She also provides a platform for underrepresented cuisines and writes extensively about travel and food in the context of culture and identity. In 2024, her cookbook*Einfach Chinesisch* was published by DuMont.
