Kolloquium: Kunstgeschichte und Krieg

In the organizer's words:

Just as war affects all areas of life, striving for peace is a responsibility of all - and therefore also of all sciences. Critical art history has a particular role to play here: Not only can wars be caused by images, they are also waged with images. War is communicated to the world through images, and the effects can be documented in images. These forms of using images have a long tradition - but have also been given completely new twists by current digital possibilities and media. At the same time, all images remain far removed from the real suffering of those affected in war zones. And they cannot save anything from the destruction there. However, strategies of deliberately destroying or appropriating cultural assets and then rebuilding them show the significance and symbolic value of these tangible and intangible cultural assets. Here, too, art history has a special responsibility. The event examines some of these aspects and aims to remind us of the manifold responsibilities of art history in the face of war.
