Kölner Bunker-Fahrrad-Tour 2024

Cologne's bunkers are relics from terrible times. Over time, they have been converted into rehearsal rooms, shooting ranges or cultural centers. High bunkers are visible, while other bunkers can be accessed through hidden entrances or floor slabs. Many people are unaware that there are several nuclear bunkers in Cologne. Underground car parks and subway stations sometimes have a dual function.

The elevated bunker at Marktstraße 6 is the starting point of the cycle tour. We will cycle through the city together and visit the nuclear bunkers at Rudolfplatz and the Kalk-Post stop. We start at the bunker at Marktstrasse 6, where there is a shooting range for air rifles and a clubhouse with a bar. Almost everything here is still in its original state, the first floor has been converted.
We then drive to Elsaßstraße, where a bunker was built into the row of houses. This is where resistance was put up against the Nazis. Unfortunately, as this building was sold to an investor, we can only see it from the outside. We see some striking graffiti and hear about resistance fighters who threw crockery out of the windows at the Nazis.
We pass the Ringe and stop briefly at Beethovenplatz. Below this square, where a kiosk stands today, there used to be a bunker hospital.

Interesting details are presented in the nuclear bunker on Rudolfplatz. In the seventies, several bus stops and underground parking garages were planned as fallout shelters. In the Kalk-Post nuclear bunker, you can get an exact picture of how it was planned to ensure that people could survive for 14 days during a nuclear attack.

Notes Route: Hochbunker Marktstraße 8, Rudolfplatz nuclear bunker - Kalk nuclear bunker. We cycle in a group. Please pay attention to the traffic and follow the road traffic regulations. Cologne is developing into a cycling city. Nevertheless, there will always be people who are surprised or annoyed by a bicycle network.
