"Lighten my eyes" - Psalms, songs and "Harp Consorts" by William Lawes

During the English Civil War, one of England's greatest composers died in 1645 at the age of just 43: William Lawes. Famous as a court composer to King Charles I for his original consort music for viol ensemble, he quickly fell into oblivion. Robin Pharo and his ensemble Près de votre oreille (Close to your ear), founded in 2017, are now making it possible to rediscover this musical personality, whose work is characterized by harmonic and contrapuntal boldness as well as a flair for unusual expressivity. The program "Lighten mine eies" is a combination of instrumental and vocal works by William Lawes, combining movements from the consort music for harp, viola da gamba, theorbo and violin with psalm settings and songs in an atmospherically dense way. An enchanting compilation with which Près de votre oreille lives up to its name, as the ensemble performs it in the intimate ambience of the Old Rheder Church, really "close to your ear"!
