Concert by the Collegium Cantorum Cologne chamber choir with works from Telemann to Mahler
Thomas Gebhardt, conductor
It was not singing and music to which Hamburg owed its prosperity and fame. It was the other way around: prosperity made it possible to promote the arts. Those who were born here with talent were able to develop, and the gifted were drawn to the Elbe to seek their fortune. The Composers' Quarter bears witness to this cultural wealth: it is dedicated to six composers and one female composer.
The Collegium Cantorum Köln has taken a look around this treasure trove of tradition. It now sings choral works ranging from Telemann motets to a choral arrangement of a Wunderhorn song by Mahler. It is also dedicated to works that have not (yet) found a place in the composers' quarter . It is a special opportunity to hear a chorale from Handel's Brockes Passion, written for Hamburg, followed by the arrangement that J. S. Bach made of it. Louise Reichardt, on the other hand, has fallen into oblivion as a once influential figure in Hamburg's musical life. The choir would like to contribute to drawing attention to her again.
