Konzert: Kantapper (Postrock-Psychedelic-Jazz)

Kassel - It was a short but violent thunderstorm that unleashed itself musically on the cozy studio stage in the Kulturbunker on Saturday evening. In the eye of the cyclone, the trio Kantapper proved with a mixture of text and sound collage, Jimi Hendrix reminiscences and jazz improvisation that dramatic weather conditions do have aesthetic appeal.

Behind the term Kantapper lies the fairy tale of the big, fat pancake that hops out of the pan and sets off on a journey. His encounter with various animals ends with him being eaten by a pig. With imaginatively modified fragments of this tale, electric bassist and cornet player Uli Sobotta created a Dadaist sound painting between the free rhythm improvisations of drummer Steffen Moddrow and the sound decorations of guitarist Thomas Maos, which took away the often pathetically displayed seriousness of the intellectually influenced genre of free music.

It was a concert of the pleasing avant-garde, because both the rocking ostinati and the electronic effects came shooting over the edge of the stage quite pleasingly. If they played a little harder, metal kids and industrial fans would also enjoy this trio. As it was, they stayed within the limits and experimented with jack cable effects, snoring noises and balloons, and at times one was reminded of the legendary sessions of Nels Cline and Larry Ochs or the guitar playing of Derek Bailey. After 70 minutes, the storm had subsided and the trio left the stage to great applause. A great Shelter Sounds concert, contemporary and innovative. (Andreas Köthe)
