Stella & Stella
Protest songs and chansons about Germans and Greeks in resistance Brecht/Weill and Heine meet Theodorakis and Hadjidakis
Greece has always been a place of longing for Germans, just as Germany was a magnet for many Greeks, especially with its economic miracle in the 1950s. This transfer led to a lively cultural exchange, which the singers Stella & Stella explore in a new musical way. This song recital focuses on the diverse musical traces of resistance, whose dramatic stories are reflected in many songs. To this end, Stella & Stella embark on a journey through Greek, German, Sephardic, Greco-Italian, Hebrew and Yiddish soundscapes that have one thing in common: resistance to tyranny and despotism as well as the pursuit of freedom. The musical caravan with songs by Theodorakis, Hatzidakis and Livaneli as well as Heine, Brecht and Weill consciously crosses borders and sings of the free spirit of mankind. Songs by the successful Brecht/Weill duo form the common thread of this evening of songs, which draws on German and Greek classics that provide clever answers in difficult times. The journey through German-Greek stories of migration and resistance also sheds light on the relationship between the two countries from a new perspective by emphasizing the connections between Greek and German composers and combining them in surprising ways. Always with reference to the devastating consequences of fascism, racism and war. The destruction of the National Socialists in Greece was unprecedented and, like everywhere else in Europe, they also launched their campaign of extermination against the Jews there. The consequences are still visible almost 80 years after the end of the war and Greece is still waiting for compensation today. Stella & Stella continue their intercultural musical journey with this extraordinary evening of songs. They mix German and Greek with other languages and musical styles. Stella & Stella think their music without borders, take a clear stand for Europe, against exclusion and sing for cohesion in difficult times.
