Chamber opera by Marius Felix Lange based on the book of the same name by Janne Teller | Libretto by Janne Teller with islands of poetry by Nora Gomringer | In German
Duration: 1 1/4 hours | no intermission | ages 14 and up
Imagine a war suddenly breaks out in our country. Not somewhere far away, to be followed only on television, but here, right on our doorstep. Suddenly it's all about surviving the next day. Cold, hunger and fear dominate everyday life.
The opera "War. Imagine if it were here" tells the story of a German family for whom a secure future can no longer be taken for granted. They can only survive if they organize their escape. An undertaking that is only open to those with privileged connections. The family manages to flee to Egypt. Although they feel safer there than in the war, the people seeking protection from the north with their useless skills and Western customs are not welcome. Life in the tent camp is more bearable than at home, but until the family is granted temporary asylum, bitterness, confinement and conflict dominate their everyday lives for two years. When the war finally ends after years of hardship in a foreign country and a return to Germany is possible, the children are already adults. And torn between two cultures. What does home mean to them now?
