Rome, early nineties. The Iron Curtain is a thing of the past, the world is celebrating the "end of the end of the world". People are longing for happiness and peace - and this time they seem to mean it. The charismatic, young and internationally acclaimed poet Jakob Dreiser from West Germany has been living in Rome for two years, a place where the new age has arrived. But Jakob is missing something. At the summer party of the Russian embassy, he unexpectedly meets Dieter Germeshausen. An introverted man, steeped in melancholy, who could not be more unlike Jakob. Jakob knows how to deal with people, whereas Dieter shies away from social encounters. This is precisely why Jakob Dreiser is so valuable to the former secret service agent and double agent. Circumstances force Dieter Germeshausen to flee, and in the innocent Jakob Dreiser he believes he has found the key to the success of his final mission in Kazakhstan.

Kristof Magnusson writes novels and plays, translates from Icelandic into German and is committed to literature in simple language. In his new novel "The Journey to the End of History" (Klett-Cotta), he tells a story about deception, longing and a spectacular journey of adventure against a backdrop of profound historical upheaval.
