Nicholas Potter presents his new book "The New Authoritarian Left" in the taz Talk. With the help of personal insights, he explains the contradictions of an extreme left in conversation with Erica Zingher.

It presents itself as progressive, but since Hamas ' attack on Israel it has become increasingly anti-democratic: the new authoritarian left. With dogmatic zeal, it reinterprets radical Islamist terrorist violence as decolonial resistance.

It readily accepts propaganda and disinformation from autocratic regimes or dubious "alternative media". Anyone who disagrees is quickly regarded as an enemy, and it stirs up hatred against the press - including calls for murder. Even after the ceasefire in Gaza.

Through investigative research and his own personal story, journalist Nicholas Potter provides insights into the very heart of this movement. He uncovers the network of the new authoritarian left, shows how it operates and asks: Are we as a democratic society prepared for this?

🐾NicholasPotter, born in the UK in 1990, is a journalist and editor at taz. His articles on topics such as right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism have also appeared in newspapers such as the Tagesspiegel and Jüdische Allgemeine, and abroad in the Guardian and Haaretz, among others. In 2024 he was nominated for the Theodor Wolff Prize. Potter lives in Berlin.

🐾EricaZingher is a journalist, author and presenter. She is a columnist for the taz ("Grauzone") and host of the ZEIT podcast"Was Jetzt". Her work deals with anti-Semitism, Jewish life, post-Soviet migration, Eastern Europe and Israel.
