Krooked Kings

The Krooked Kings from Salt Lake City in the US state of Utah once called their music "the love wedding of Mac DeMarco and Julian Casablancas from The Strokes". That pretty much sums it up, although you'd have to add the Beach Boys as witnesses to the marriage into that equation. At least after the release of the second Krooked-Kings album "All Out Of Good Days", which in its strongest moments can develop a similar harmonic frenzy as Brian Wilson's masterpieces. This happens especially in the track "Sick Of Being Young", which ironically doesn't sound as cheeky as the cheeky song title of a band just out of college would suggest. The song is more about the old bourgeois who want to persuade Oli Martin, Paul Colgan and their comrades-in-arms to get rid of the nonsense of a music career. As an answer there's this at the same time casually and hymnically presented song answer, in which Oli Martin sings: "You said, "I should go back to school" / "I should act my age" / "Stop acting a fool" / Well, I'm stuck in my ways / I'm biding my time / Is that such a crime?" Before the chorus kicks in and Oli confesses, "Oh, I'm sick of being young / Yeah, I'm sick of being young / So I'm calling your bluff." Another highlight of the current record is "Good And Drunk." Here, the Krooked Kings don't sing a hymn about soaking your sorrows in booze, but deliver to the catchy chorus the hard and generally known realization that all the sorrows will still be there tomorrow and seem even bigger and more evil.
